Things Are Looking Up (911 - RSVP) |
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0027090/This was Vivien Leigh's first film. I was reading in the IMDB that this film is thought to be lost. I have a print of this film which is in pretty great shape and I want to get it to the British Film Preservation place. Does anybody know how to contact them? It is not Public Domain because it is lost. I found it on a subscription site where I find tons of great old films. The IMDB always asks if you own the rights etc. which leads me to think these films are PD.
I am rather hesitant to put it here as I don't own it, I just found it.
Please advise...
BTW, I have never claimed to know anything about copyrights but I do know when something that is in the Archive for years it must be PD. I have challenged and prevailed on every strike regarding the Cary Grant films in the Archive. All of them are in the Public Domain.

A film's status as lost or extant has nothing to do with its legal status as under copyright or in the public domain.
Also, the IMDb does not ask "do you own the rights to this" because it might be public domain. They grant editing privileges to rights owners to ensure that information is correct and complete, and might also work out deals for streaming, hosting, and such.
I'm only loosely familiar with British copyright law, so I can't comment on whether this one has fallen into the public domain or not. Given the year of release, it is possible, but you'll want to consult someone who knows more than me about how to check if it is or not. (Video Cellar is the resident expert around here, more or less. If he doesn't know, he'll point you at someone who does.)
May I ask what leads you to think this one is lost? There is no notation to that effect on IMDb's trivia page, and there are multiple user reviews that seem to be contemporaneous, rather than distant memories, and make no reference to it being impossible to find.
BritMovie also gives a plot synopsis, without any indication of it being lost.

Thanks so muchfor your reply. I did read in the IMDB that this film was lost. I will go back and find it again. Thanks for the clarification of the statement in the IMDB regarding the own the rights statement.
I know that Shane is an expert on copyright Law and I have asked many times if the films I have posted to Community are in the Public Domain. Nobody ever checks, I am ignored. As far as I can tell they ignore tons of folks and that is rude. They claim expertise but provide zero assistance. There are several nice folks though. Not many but a few!
I will go back and find the statement as it was Leigh's first film. I have it and will convert it and post it to Community where all the NON PD films are. Shane can get it and work on it and I will find the British Film Preservation thing and figure out how to get it to them. Leigh is not credited but it was her first film. I am a huge Leigh and Farmer fan, maybe because they were both Bi-Polar. That gene leads to extraordinary talent in the arts for some reason. Farmer had the worst, they Lobotomized her and then sent her to B Movie Hell.

The thing is, people have lives, and pretty much everybody here does everything for free. It's not rude not to see or notice something if you only check in once in a great while. which, given how little activity there's been here for some time, is easy to understand. Declaring that a lack of response in a forum is rude is a bit harsh given that you don't know what's going on with them in real life.
As for posting it, it would be better if you refrained until you could confirm that it is public domain. Disrespecting the rights of the makers and their heirs *IS* rude (not to mention violating their property rights), and posting it just because other people are doing it is not an excuse. Doing it as a mistake is one thing. Doing it purposely is quite another.
You're welcome, and I'm sorry I don't know more about British copyright law or how it's changed over the years.

I did not intend to be rude nor did I intend to violate anyone's copyright. I am a musician and I know when somebody steals my music it is just nasty. I studied at The New England Conservatory and was a child 'oddity' and have sold songs to Madonna and have 'ghosted' on major releases on the Piano. I have 'perfect pitch' and my ear never forgets anything. Musicians who were at odds with the group would call me and ask me to play for the Keyboard member so they could get the release out on time.
Having said that, I am temporarily disabled due to a broken leg. My little dog pulled me and I fell and have a spiral fracture in my left leg. I understand how to use the Internet as when I was married my ex and I had one of the very first dot coms which was sold in 1999 before the 'bubble' burst. My area of expertise is in Analytics and I have crunched numbers for SEC filings and characterized markets as well. I know how to code but not in PHP. I now rescue off track Thoroughbred Horses to save them from being dinner in France.
I have time on my hands and if I could be of any help to the archive I will volunteer now!
I will contact the Video Cellar and see what the best way to those Frances Farmer films is. I will see how to get the Vivien Leigh film to the British people is. I will not post them, but please keep Too Many Parents there so the Video Cellar can grab it.
There are 2 other films I have posted that are in the Public domain and they are Johnny O'Clock and Black Fury.
BTW, One Eyed Jacks with Brando is not PD.
